Development bank of the Federal Republic and Federal States To reduce poverty, protect the climate, ensure peace and organise globalisation in such a way that those living in the world's poorer regions will benefit, too - by the year 2015 the international community wants to be a few steps closer to reaching these goals. In practice, this means: food security and basic education for all, healthy economic growth that does not occur at the expense of the environment, reliable energy supply that helps preserve the climate, and financial services that are available to all and enable people to escape from poverty. As a development bank, we work on behalf of the German Government towards attaining these goals. |

Cambodia enjoys friendly relations with Germany. Germany actively supports this South-East Asian country in its moves towards development and democratisation. Cambodia is an important partner country for German development cooperation. The main areas of activity in this partnership are promoting rural development, developing the health sector and promoting democracy, civil society and public administration (good governance). Cambodia is a pilot country under the harmonisation initiative of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): in keeping with the 2005 Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and the 2008 Accra Agenda for Action, development cooperation and technical exchange between the various donors involved in the country and the Cambodian government should be coordinated wherever possible. An improved division of labour and effective consultation and coordination among donors is to cut transaction costs and thus enhance aid effectiveness. Germany is supporting this process. Cambodia is also a pilot country in the process to put into practice the EU Code of Conduct. This provides for a division of labour among member states in partner countries and between members states and the European Commission. In this process, Germany plays the part of in-country coordinator. |

WFP is assisting over one million people in Cambodia. Through a Protracted Relief and Rehabilitation Operation (PRRO) attends to 1 million food-insecure people in a post-conflict environment, most of them in rural Cambodia. The majority of the activities are food-for-work schemes such as the construction or rehabilitation of roads, ponds and irrigation canals. The overall goal of WFP's assistance is to improve the immediate and sustainable food security for the hungry poor in crisis. Both short and medium-term needs will be addressed by the program “Assisting People in Crisis”. In addition, a limited amount of resources are allocated to relief food distributions, food-for-education (FFE), food-for-training (FFT), food-for-work (FFW) and support to people living with HIV (PLHIV) and tuberculosis (TB) and have been implemented to increase the resilience of the vulnerable poor. These activities will continue to be carried out in conjunction with a small-scale development project, Support to Maternal and Child Health which addresses the nutritional needs of pregnant and lactating women, as well as young children between 6-24 months. These two projects contribute to the pursuit of UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) through the following activities:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people. FAO's activities comprise four main areas:Putting
information within reach. FAO serves as a knowledge network.
We use the expertise of our staff - agronomists, foresters, fisheries
and livestock specialists, nutritionists, social scientists, economists,
statisticians and other professionals - to collect, analyse and
disseminate data that aid development. A million times a month, someone
visits the FAO Internet site to consult a technical document or read
about our work with farmers. We also publish hundreds of newsletters,
reports and books, distribute several magazines, create numerous CD-ROMS
and host dozens of electronic fora. |

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Its mission is to fight poverty with passion and professionalism for lasting results and to help people help themselves and their environment by providing resources, sharing knowledge, building capacity and forging partnerships in the public and private sectors.
Cambodia's economy is showing resilience in spite of the challenging international economic environment. Economic growth in 2001 was estimated at 6.3 percent, driven by an expanding tourism sector and robust garment exports. In 2001, there was nearly zero inflation. In 2002 inflation continued to be low. The budgetary performance improved in 2001, with a modest increase in revenue and also a modest reorientation of public spending towards the critical social sectors. The prospects this year are broadly favorable, as well, with the Government aiming for a 5.5 percent increase in GDP. |
